Located in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir's Trikuta Mountains is the little town of Katra. It is mostly well-known for Maa Vaishno Devi, one of the holiest sites for Hindu pilgrims. However, Katra is much more than just a place to go for pilgrimage. In and around Katra, there are numerous revered, significant, and stunning locations worth seeing. It is also a haven for shoppers. In this primary market, you may purchase leather goods, produce, rugs, and other interesting items. If you're thinking about visiting this divine location, keep these things in mind as well to get the full tour experience.
The Vaishno Devi temple is the sole location that comes to mind when we think of Katra. The Trikuta mountains surround the temple. The shrine contains the cave where Mata manifested as three different types of rocks, called Pindies. One kilometre from the bus stop is where the yatra's entrance, known as Darshani Darwaza, is located.
You must hike 13 kilometres uphill from Katra to the sacred shrine. For the old and frail, horse and palanquin services are available. The shrine can also be reached by walking 2.5 kilometres from Sanjichhat after taking a helicopter ride there. Sanjichhat is a lovely location from which you may take in a magnificent vista of the Himalayas.
On the route to Maa Vaishno Devi's cave or bhawan, this is one of the most auspicious spots to visit in Katra. The footprints of Maa can be observed on a rock slab at Charan Paduka. The saint-turned-demon Bhairavnath was pursuing Mata Vaishno Devi, also known as Vaishnavi. She made the decision to take a little break here before heading back to her cave. Her footprints became embedded in the stone at that point. Before continuing your ascent to the cave where Mata is located, stop by Charan Paduka to ask for her blessings.
Ban Ganga is another revered location to visit when travelling to Vaishno Devi. It is among the top attractions in Katra. One of the best things to do in Kahsmir in June is to visit the Shivalik Range of the Himalayas, where this Ganga originates. The monkey who was travelling with Mata Vaishanvi at the time began to feel thirsty as she approached her cave home. Maa threw an arrow into the ground because there was no water around, and the Ganga emerged. It was dubbed Ban (arrow) Ganga as a result.
It's interesting to note that it's also known as Bal (hair) Ganga because it's thought that Maa washed her hair there. While making the ascent to the Devi's shrine, devotees can unwind by bathing in Ban or Bal Ganga. Before moving on to other Katra tourist attractions, take a plunge to feel rejuvenated and happy.
After immersing yourself in Maa's spirit and energy at the Vaishno Devi temple, climb a little higher to pay a visit to Baba Bhairavnath, one of the top Katra tourist attractions. To get to the Bhairavnath temple from Vaishno Devi, you only need to trek two to three kilometres higher. Up here, the vista is even more magnificent and captivating.
The saint Bhairav, who afterwards turned evil, is honoured in this temple. Maa Vaishno Devi killed him here. He received forgiveness since he regretted his faults. This location is referred to as being as significant as Vaishno Devi because Maa declared that a pilgrimage to my shrine would be incomplete without stopping by the Bhairavnath temple.
One of the odd sites to visit in Katra is Baag-e-Bahu. It is around 45 kilometres from Katra. After touring the different holy locations, it is the perfect spot to unwind.
Visit the renowned Bahu Fort nearby if you appreciate history and your body isn't too worn out after the trek. The fort and the founding of Jammu are connected by a fascinating story. Inside the fort, there is a temple devoted to Maa Kali.
Although Vaishno Devi is accessible to pilgrims throughout the year, the best time to get there is from March to October. Since the weather is calm and pleasant throughout these months, many pilgrims travel to Vaishno Devi, but the majority of people schedule their trip for the Navratras.
